A reader with no count

Every reader in the table below keeps a running figure for what you have not got to. It is the most-copied idea in the category, and the one that turns reading into a debt.

Taper has no count, no badge and no dot anywhere, including on the app icon. What replaces it is an ending: an edition holds the number of items you set, and the last one has nothing underneath it.

A reader with no AI

Most paid tiers in this category now lead with a model: Leo behind Feedly Pro+, AI on Inoreader Pro, Ask AI on NewsBlur's archive tier, and a newer set of products that summarises your sources and sends the summary instead of the articles.

Taper has no model anywhere in it. Nothing is summarised, nothing is ranked by anything you did not write, and no part of what you read is sent to a third party. What decides an edition is three words per source, set by you:

Always: Never counted against the size. The five or eight publishers you would be annoyed to miss.
Normal: Fair turns for the slots that are left, so a source posting forty times a day and one posting weekly compete evenly.
Background: Fills whatever remains, and is otherwise not delivered.

A reader that never counts sources

NewsBlur stops at sixty-four sites. Feedly at a hundred, Inoreader at a hundred and fifty. Arrive at any of them with an OPML file of two hundred feeds and you meet the wall before you have read a single item.

Taper never counts sources, on either tier. It is one of three published constraints on what the paid tier may be, written down so that breaking one is visible rather than quiet. The edition size is what meters attention here, and a second ceiling underneath it would be an admission that the first one does not work.
